Studying in Enschede

When you study in Enschede, you will need to arrange a few things to make your stay a pleasant one. Here are some helpful tips.

Register as a resident

Are you staying in Enschede for more than 4 months? Then you must register as a resident with the Personal Records Database (Basisregistratie personen - BRP). To do so, please make an appointment with the municipality (Gemeente). You can find more information about registration and the documents needed on the website enschede.nl(externe link).

Get your BSN (citizen service number)

After registering with the BRP, you automatically get a Burgerservicenummer (BSN). This is your unique and personal number for government services in the Netherlands. You need your BSN to:

  • take out health insurance
  • open a bank account
  • get a job or internship.

Keep your BSN safe. This helps to prevent identity fraud. For more information, visit the government website(externe link).

Apply for a DigiD (digital identification)

DigiD is the online ID you need for government services, such as:

  • Studylink
  • DUO (student finance)
  • Belastingdienst (taxes)
  • or municipal services.

You will find more information on iamexpat.nl(externe link).

Open a Dutch bank account

A Dutch bank account can make life easier. You can use it, for example, to:

  • pay for groceries
  • pay your bills
  • receive your salary or internship allowance.

Think about if a Dutch bank account(externe link) is useful for you.

Health insurance is required

If you live in the Netherlands, you must have health insurance. You can choose the type of insurance that fits you best. See also: Healthcare insurance | Study in NL(externe link).

Other insurances

You can also think about taking out other insurances. For example:
liability insurance
repatriation insurance
or household contents insurance.
See for more information: Other insurances | Study in NL(externe link).

Housing

Finding a place to live can be difficult. Housing is scarce, so prices are high. It is good to check if your rent is fair and your contract is correct. Do you have problems with your landlord? You can report your concerns to the municipality: Bad landlord practice hotline | Gemeente Enschede(externe link).
